This indicator relates to an organisation's Security Personnel Requirements and is a component of IFC Performance Standard 4 (Community Health, Safety and Security). The organisation must ensure the level of security they employ is proportional to risks and that they take steps to avoid exacerbating potential for conflict or community tensions. The organisation must consult with local communities to ensure security needs are met and that this is achieved in a culturally-sensitive way. The organisation must ensure that use of force by their security personnel is used only as a last resort, and that the scenarios in which this response is permitted must be communicated effectively to local communities. Other Performance Standards may also be applicable to a project. The Performance Standards are required for clients of IFC, but may also be applied by other organisations to manage their social and environmental management practices.
